Square Appointments and Square Invoices give a solo cleaner bookings, reminders, cards on file, and invoices for $0 a month as of September 10, 2026. You pay only per payment: 2.6% plus 15 cents in person, 3.3% plus 30 cents online, 3.5% plus 15 cents for a card on file. This article covers what the free plans include, what Plus adds, what each payment costs, how to set Square up for cleaning, and when to move on. It complements do you need scheduling software as a solo cleaner and the best scheduling software guide.

Square Invoices follows the same three tiers with the same processing rates, and its free plan includes sending invoices and payment links, recurring invoices, and saved cards.
Square’s page describes the Free plan as being for solo professionals taking payments and managing schedules, and Plus for growing teams. That matches how a cleaning business should read it: Free for one person, Plus only if you need automated no-show fees, a waitlist, or texted notifications, and Premium for salons, not cleaners.
What the free plan gives a solo cleaner
For $0 a month, a solo cleaner gets:
- A hosted booking page where customers pick a service and a time. Add a “Book now” button to a website or a Google Business Profile, or share the link directly.
- Appointment reminders by email, with texts on Plus.
- Card on file at booking, so you can charge after the visit and enforce a cancellation policy by hand.
- Invoices and payment links with bank transfer as an option.
- A customer list with visit history.
- Unlimited staff calendars, which a solo cleaner does not need yet but which means a first helper does not force an upgrade.
Set up your services as a short menu with a duration and price each, following the flat-rate grid from how to price house cleaning services: for example, Standard clean 2 bed 1 bath, Standard clean 3 bed 2 bath, Deep clean 3 bed 2 bath, and a Move-out clean that routes to a quote. Keep the menu short; a customer scrolling a list of twenty services will call instead.
What each payment costs, in dollars
Square’s free plan has the highest online and card-on-file rates among the tools we cover, which is the trade for paying nothing per month. On a $150 visit:
| How the customer pays | Free plan rate | Fee on $150 |
|---|---|---|
| Card tapped or dipped in person | 2.6% + 15¢ | $4.05 |
| Online booking or invoice link | 3.3% + 30¢ | $5.25 |
| Card on file, charged after the visit | 3.5% + 15¢ | $5.40 |
| Bank transfer through an invoice | 1% | $1.50 |
| Cash or check | Free | $0 |
Prices verified September 10, 2026 against the vendor pages listed under Sources checked.
At 40 visits a month paid by card on file, the fees are about $216, against about $186 at the 2.9% plus 30 cents that Stripe, Jobber, and Square Plus charge for online payments. The difference of roughly $30 a month is less than Plus costs, so for a solo cleaner the free plan still wins. It stops winning when volume grows or when the Plus features are needed anyway. The invoicing guide compares every processor.
Recurring clients who are comfortable paying from a bank account cut the cost to 1%. For a $150 biweekly client, that is $3 a month in fees instead of about $11.
Where Square stops being enough
Square is not cleaning software, and the gaps show up in a predictable order:
- Pricing by home size. Square prices services, not homes. A form that calculates a total from bedrooms, bathrooms, frequency, and add-ons is what BookingKoala, Zenbooker, and Maidily are built around.
- Recurring visits with cleaner assignment. Square handles recurring appointments for a staff member, but the cleaning-specific tools handle recurring visits, team assignment, arrival windows, and checklists together.
- Cleaning-specific communication. Square’s reminders talk about appointments. ZenMaid’s and BookingKoala’s talk about cleanings, with dozens of templates.
- Automated cancellation fees are a Plus feature at $49 a month, which is more than Maidily Start or ZenMaid Starter cost in full.
- Checklists, GPS, and payroll do not exist in Square Appointments.
The first helper, or the first time you want a real booking form, is usually the moment to move. Square can stay as the card processor: ZenMaid and Maidily both list Square alongside Stripe for payments, so the customer’s saved card and your rate can carry over.
Setting it up for cleaning, in an evening
- Create the Free account and the booking page. Add your logo and service area in the description.
- Add four to six services with durations and prices from your flat-rate grid, plus a “Move-out clean (quote)” service with no online booking, so requests come to you.
- Turn on card on file at booking and require it.
- Write your cancellation policy into the booking page text and the confirmation email, and plan to charge the saved card by hand when needed.
- Set the reminder to the evening before.
- Put the booking link in your Google Business Profile, your text signature, and your website.
- Set up recurring invoices with bank transfer for any client who prefers to pay that way.
Then leave it alone and watch whether bookings arrive. If they do, you have learned what you needed at no cost.
Key takeaways
- Square Appointments and Square Invoices are free for one location as of September 10, 2026, with a booking site, reminders, card on file, invoices, and unlimited staff calendars.
- Free-plan processing is 2.6% plus 15 cents in person, 3.3% plus 30 cents online, 3.5% plus 15 cents for a card on file, and 1% for bank transfers. Plus at $49 a month lowers the online rate and adds automated no-show fees.
- For a solo cleaner with a short flat-rate menu, Square is the cheapest complete setup, and the higher card rates cost less than any subscription.
- Square does not price by home size, assign cleaners to recurring visits, or provide checklists. Move to cleaning-specific software at the first helper or the first real booking form.
- Square can stay as the payment processor behind ZenMaid or Maidily after you move.
Frequently asked questions
Is Square Appointments free for a cleaning business?
Yes. As of September 10, 2026, Square Appointments' Free plan is $0 a month per location and includes an online booking site, appointment reminders, unlimited staff calendars, and card on file. Square Invoices also has a free plan. You pay only Square's processing fees on payments, which are higher on the free plan than on Plus.
What does Square charge per payment on the free plan?
As of September 10, 2026: 2.6% plus 15 cents when a card is tapped, dipped, or swiped in person; 3.3% plus 30 cents for online and invoice payments; 3.5% plus 15 cents for a card on file or manually entered card; and 1% for bank (ACH) transfers through an invoice. Cash and check are free to record. Square Plus at $49 a month lowers the online rate to 2.9% plus 30 cents.
Can Square price a cleaning by bedrooms and bathrooms?
Not the way cleaning-specific booking forms do. Square Appointments lists services with a duration and price, so you create services such as Standard clean, 2 bed 1 bath and let customers pick. That works for a small menu of flat rates. For a form that calculates price from home size, frequency, and add-ons, a cleaning-specific tool such as BookingKoala, Maidily, or Zenbooker is built for it.
Does Square Appointments have a cancellation policy feature?
Square lists cancellation policy and no-show fees among the features of its paid Plus plan, along with multi-staff booking, a waitlist, and resource management, as of September 10, 2026. On the Free plan you can state a policy and charge a saved card manually, but the automated fee is a Plus feature.
When should a cleaning business move off Square?
When you hire, want a booking form that prices by home size, need recurring-visit scheduling with cleaner assignment and checklists, or want reminders and receipts that talk about cleaning rather than appointments. At that point Maidily, ZenMaid, BookingKoala, and Zenbooker start at $0 to $29 a month and are built for the work. Square remains a fine payment processor behind several of them.
